Parents and guardians can stay involved in their student’s learning by creating a Canvas Observer account. This allows you to see what your student is working on in their classes.
Once you create an account, you can use the same login every year—no need to make a new one!
✅ What Can Parents See in Canvas?
With a Parent (Observer) account, you can:
View course content, assignments, due dates, and calendars
Read announcements and download documents
Send messages to the teacher
❌ What Parents Cannot Do in Canvas: Creating a Canvas Observer Account:
Submit assignments or take quizzes
Join student groups
Send messages to other students
View the full class list (roster)
See courses that haven’t been published yet

Creating a Canvas Observer Account:
Note: You will need your student(s) present for this step
Part 1
Get a Pairing Code from Your Student's Canvas Account
To link your Parent (Observer) account to your student’s Canvas account, follow these steps:
Ask your student to log in to their Canvas account.
Once logged in, have them click on their Account icon (usually in the top left corner).
- Select Settings from the menu.
On the right-hand side, click Pair with Observer.
A six-character code (letters and numbers) will appear. Copy this code exactly as shown – it is case sensitive.
Part 2
Now It's Time for the Parent to Create a Canvas Account
Note: If you are an employee and would like to add your student to your Canvas Parent account, please register using a personal email address rather than your GCISD email. This helps ensure proper access and account setup.

1. Click Parent of a Canvas User? link
2. Complete the Parent Signup form then click Start Participating.
Have Multiple Students?
Follow these instructions to add multiple students to your Parent Observer account.
Note: More than one parent or guardian can observe the same student in Canvas. Each parent just needs to create their own account and use a pairing code to connect with the student. (a new Paring Code may need to be regenerated)
1. Login to your Canvas Observer account
Click one of the links below to get started:
2. Click on Account
3. Click on Observing
4. Type in the Student's Pairing Code
5. Hit the +Student button
6. You can also remove students from here if needed
Tips for Managing multiple students and Using the Parent App
As a Parent Observer in Canvas, you can see a lot of helpful information about your child’s classes. If you’re keeping track of more than one student, it can feel a bit overwhelming. Here are a few easy ways to stay organized:
🏷️ Use Course Nicknames
You can rename courses to help you quickly tell them apart.
Add your child’s name or initial to the course title (example: K: US History or Ava – Math).
These nicknames will show up on your Dashboard, in the course menu, and in notification emails.
Only you will see the nicknames—they don’t change for your student or the teacher.
To do this: Click the three dots on a course card and select the nickname option.
🎨 Color-Code Courses
Assign a different color to each student’s courses.
For example, all of Child #1’s classes can be blue, and all of Child #2’s classes can be green.
The colors will match in your Dashboard and Calendar.
This helps you quickly see which course belongs to which child.
To do this: Click the three dots on a course card and choose a color.

The Canvas Parent App makes it easy to check your student’s:
Calendar
Upcoming assignments
Course announcements
Note: You can only view one student at a time in the app. The app will work once your student’s courses are available in Canvas.
